Minister Defends EU Climate Ambitions

The German Federal Minister for Development Cooperation, Reem Alabali Radovan, has voiced her support for the European Commission’s newly proposed climate protection targets for 2040. In an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”, Minister Radovan described the ambitious goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 90% as “ambitious, but right.

She emphasized the far-reaching consequences of climate change, noting its contribution to global crises such as displacement, poverty, hunger and conflict, extending beyond localized impacts like record temperatures. The fight against global warming, she asserted, is “a vital necessity, also to prevent further escalation in the future” a reality that she believes should be universally understood.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the proposed emissions reduction target earlier this week. While other officials, including Climate Protection Minister Carsten Schneider, have praised the initiative, it has also faced criticism from within the business sector.

Acknowledging a growing resistance to climate protection measures within Germany, Minister Radovan highlighted the impact of recent extreme heat as a stark reminder of the scale of the challenge ahead. She refuted the notion that only Europe is concerned with climate action, underscoring that for numerous developing nations, it has become a constant and ongoing struggle.
