Minister Explains Reasoning

The German Federal Minister of Agriculture, Alois Rainer, has stated that current budgetary constraints preclude a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on essential foodstuffs. Addressing concerns about rising food prices, Rainer emphasized his focus on establishing equitable conditions for producers rather than directly influencing retail pricing.

Speaking to “Tagesspiegel” Rainer reiterated that his mandate lies in fostering a competitive agricultural sector and alleviating burdens on food producers. He cautioned against measures that could artificially inflate the cost of meat, specifically referencing potential strategies such as animal welfare levies or VAT increases.

Rainer, referencing his prior experience as a butcher, underscored the importance of proper animal welfare practices, stating that humane slaughtering necessitates adequate anesthesia. He noted that a proper slaughtering process is akin to a surgical procedure requiring skilled execution.

On a more personal note, the Minister disclosed his preferred family meal is roast pork with dumplings, sauerkraut and gravy, asserting this dish is a consistent favorite within his household. He added, reflecting family preferences, that there is no demand for alternative protein sources like tofu.
