Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) has rejected calls for raising inheritance tax. Speaking to the news magazine Focus, the CDU politician stated, “An increase in inheritance tax would be detrimental to our country. It would primarily affect family businesses-the most stable pillar of our economy”. She added, “Suspecting high-achievers is the wrong approach. We are currently awaiting the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court and will then adapt what is constitutionally required-no more, no less”. According to the federal minister, ensuring fairness also means “protecting those who take responsibility and who are personally liable for their assets”. She particularly mentioned family entrepreneurs in this context. Reiche believes the reform package planned by the center-left coalition needs to restore the “promise of advancement”. The Christian democrat called for a shared goal and an overarching narrative, stating, “I want this country to become competitive and grow again by 2030: with affordable energy, stable social systems, an attractive tax system, and a digital state. Entrepreneurship must be enjoyable again. If we credibly convey this perspective, people will also be willing to accept temporary burdens”.
