The recent policy regarding catering at the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture has been reversed, according to its new head, Alois Rainer of the CSU party. The previous mandate, introduced by his predecessor Cem Özdemir (of the Green party), stipulated that all official ministry events serve exclusively vegetarian and organic food. Rainer announced that future events will now include meat and fish options, prioritizing regional sourcing.
Rainer, who is himself a trained butcher, emphasized a tolerant approach to diverse dietary choices. He acknowledged the validity of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, stating that these choices are perfectly acceptable. “I don’t want to wage a culture war on plates or in refrigerators” he commented. Rainer expressed equal appreciation for both vegetarian/vegan and meat-eating preferences.
Responding to questions about the dietary habits of his party leader, Markus Söder, Rainer adopted a diplomatic stance. “He simply enjoys it” Rainer said, adding that he believes in respecting individual choices regarding food. “It must taste good and be fresh, then everything is okay”.
