Moldova’s ruling pro-European party, Action and Solidarity (PAS), has secured a clear victory in parliamentary elections, successfully defending its absolute majority. Provisional results released by the Central Election Commission indicate PAS garnered 49.99% of the vote, solidifying its position as the dominant political force.
The pro-Russian “Patriotic Block” led by former President Igor Dodon, secured 24.28% of the vote, placing it as the second-largest party. The elections were widely considered to be a pivotal moment for the nation, situated between Romania and Ukraine. Moldova was granted EU candidate status in 2022 and the incumbent president, Maia Sandu, had hoped for a substantial pro-European coalition to facilitate further progress towards accession.
The election campaign witnessed heightened tensions, with accusations of external influence exchanged between Sandu and representatives of Russia. Claims included allegations of vote buying, disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks.
Beyond PAS and the Patriotic Block, the Alternative Bloc and Renato Usatii’s Nostru party are also projected to enter parliament. Notably, the PPDA party unexpectedly surpassed the five percent threshold, securing a seat in the legislature. Voter turnout reached approximately 52%, a significant increase compared to the 2021 elections.
