Munich Airport halted flight operations Friday evening following reports of possible drone activity near the airport grounds. The airport confirmed in a late-night statement that, mirroring events from the previous evening, the German air traffic control authority (DFS) made the decision to suspend operations.
The cessation of flight activity is being described as a precautionary measure “until further notice” prompted by unconfirmed drone sightings. Airport authorities emphasized that ensuring the safety of travelers remains the foremost priority when dealing with potential drone incidents.
This disruption follows a similar, hours-long shutdown on Thursday evening, which impacted thousands of passengers and resulted in flight cancellations or diversions to alternative airports. The identity of those potentially operating the drones and their motives, remain unknown. Authorities have not yet located the drones or identified any responsible individuals. The detection and defense against drones are designated responsibilities of federal and state police forces.
