A ballistic missile fired from Iran, en route to Turkish airspace, was intercepted by NATO air defence in the eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish Ministry of Defence said the weapon had first crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace, and reported no casualties or injuries.
The ministry emphasized that while Turkey supports regional stability and peace, it is prepared to protect its territory and its citizens-regardless of a threat’s origin. It stated that all measures to defend its airspace will be taken decisively and without hesitation, reserving the right to respond to hostile acts. All parties were urged to refrain from actions that could further inflame the region’s conflict.
Following the incident, Turkey says it will consult with NATO and other allies. The event represents the latest escalation in an expanding conflict. Prior to the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, Turkey had implored Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and missile capabilities, arguing that the region cannot endure further destabilisation.
