NATO Urged to Shoot Down Russian Aircraft Amid Escalation

Following a recent incident involving multiple Russian drones entering Polish airspace, military expert Carlo Masala is advocating for NATO member states to systematically intercept such objects. Addressing the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, Masala suggested that consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty should result in a decision to shoot down any Russian aircraft entering NATO territory, regardless of whether the intrusion was intentional or accidental.

However, Masala cautioned against expecting unanimous agreement on such a measure, citing anticipated resistance from Hungary and Slovakia. He believes a more realistic outcome would be a strengthening of NATO’s air defense along its eastern flank, potentially through the deployment of additional Patriot missile batteries.

Furthermore, Masala called for the European Union to intensify sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting its oil industry. He noted that US President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to implement new sanctions, characterizing this as a test of Trump’s resolve and a strong signal to Moscow.
