NATO Urges Joint Defense of High‑North Sea Lanes as Russia and China Increase Activity

At the Munich Security Conference, the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made a remark about newly opening sea routes in Greenland and across the High North. He pointed out that Russians and Chinese are “becoming increasingly active” and that NATO, together with the United States, Canada and European partners, is working to defend the High North against these new developments-an effort he said is “really important”.

Rutte also spoke about Greenland specifically, noting that the United States is meeting with Greenlandic and Danish officials to discuss what would happen if Greenland altered its constitution within the Kingdom of Denmark. He said that, in that scenario, NATO would need to ensure its engagement remains secure and would seek ways to prevent Russia and China from gaining access to Greenland.
