New Poll Shows Strong Opposition

A recent survey indicates strong public opposition to proposals for raising the statutory retirement age in Germany to 70. Conducted by the Institute for Opinion Research (Forsa) for RTL and ntv and released on Tuesday, the poll reveals that 81% of German citizens are against the concept of a “pension at 70” with only 18% expressing support for the suggestion.

The resistance to the proposal extends across the political spectrum. Notably, even within the ranks of the CDU/CSU, the political party from which the initial suggestion emerged, a significant 68% of supporters voice their opposition. This follows an earlier debate initiated by CDU Economy Minister, Katherina Reiche.

The survey data demonstrates widespread disapproval irrespective of political affiliation. Opposition is particularly strong among supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), where 95% are against the proposal and the Left party, with 90% expressing disapproval. Significant opposition is also found amongst voters of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) – 87% – and the Green Party – 74%.

The poll, commissioned by RTL Deutschland, surveyed 1,001 individuals between August 1st and 4th, 2025, to gauge public sentiment on the potential policy change.
