California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the U.S. Department of Justice of conducting investigations into those close to him for purely political reasons. Speaking in a published video, he characterized these inquiries as a retaliatory act orchestrated by former President Donald Trump.
According to Newsom, federal officials have recently approached friends, family members, and former staff. The Democrat asserted that the investigations are not being driven by the discovery of actual criminal conduct, but rather by a calculated desire to find something incriminating. Furthermore, Newsom acknowledged that he himself is currently a target, stating that Trump is “going after me because I am considering a candidacy.”
The investigations reportedly include looking into the tax dealings of Newsom’s wife, as well as a separate case involving a former chief of staff. The Governor complained that the investigators are improperly “requesting documentation” and “abusing the Grand Jury process.” He alleged that the scrutiny directed at his wife is specifically intended to cause him personal harm.
