Nordrhein-Westfalen Presses Evonik’s Autonomy Amid BASF Takeover Push

The State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia is strongly asserting the importance of maintaining Evonik’s independence as a company. A spokesperson for the Chancellery told the “Rheinische Post” that Evonik is a vital employer for over 11,000 people in the region. The statement emphasized that both the jobs and the company’s independent development must not be jeopardized.

Adding further weight to its argument, the State noted that the company is a “fundamental component of the industrial base” and holds a significant place in North Rhine-Westphalia due to its varied societal commitments.

This stance comes as BASF has expressed interest in acquiring the company. The RAG Foundation, which holds a 43 percent stake in Evonik, previously advised on BASF’s takeover offer. Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, is a member of the Foundation’s board. The Chancellery spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the Foundation’s meetings, stating that all details and backgrounds concerning the RAG Foundation’s business are strictly confidential and subject to the foundation’s internal secrecy rules.
