Several people reportedly died in a ferry accident off the coast of Northern Cyprus on Sunday afternoon. According to reports from Turkish media, the head of the Northern Cyprus government, Ünal Üstel, confirmed that there were at least six fatalities.
The passenger ferry overturned shortly after departing Kyrenia, heading toward the Turkish port of Tasucu. The incident reportedly occurred approximately two kilometers north of the Kyrenia coastline. The Turkish-Cypriot Coast Guard responded to the scene, supported by a rescue helicopter and several additional boats dispatched from Kyrenia.
Local authorities later confirmed that the vessel had 259 passengers and eight crew members on board. So far, at least 159 individuals have been rescued. Initial details regarding the cause of the accident or the condition of the rescued individuals were not immediately available, as rescue efforts were still underway.
