Northeast Germany Faces Flooding Risk

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for heavy and persistent rainfall impacting northern and northeastern Germany.

Areas within the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony are currently under alert, according to a DWD announcement released Monday from Offenbach. The severe weather conditions pose a risk of basement and street flooding, as well as potential river and stream overflows.

The current warnings are in place until Tuesday afternoon, although the DWD cautions that an extension of the warnings or expansion to include further regions remains possible.

The weather system’s development is attributed to a current influx of warm, humid air across eastern and northeastern Germany. A slowly moving weather front is generating significant and potentially severe precipitation until Tuesday afternoon.

Additional rainfall, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, is moving in from the south across the affected regions. The highest accumulations are anticipated in the area of Vorpommern. The DWD reports that precipitation is expected to gradually diminish from the south and move towards the Baltic Sea overnight into Tuesday morning.
