Oklo CEO Seeks to Introduce Small Modular Reactors in Germany Amid Policy and Safety Challenges

Jacob DeWitte, chief executive of the U.S. nuclear company Oklo, says he would love to bring his company’s novel reactor technology to Germany. “I would really like to find a way to either introduce part of this technology into the industrial ecosystem or forge partnerships – or even roll it out directly” he told Handelsblatt.

At present, he admits the prospects in Germany are slim. “The logic has to win over the fear first” DeWitte said. He criticised German governments for pursuing a “very regressive” energy policy and noted that, unlike many neighbours, Germany has adopted an ideological stance and now imports nuclear power from abroad.

Oklo is developing small modular reactors that extract energy from nuclear waste. In the United States, the company plans to supply these reactors to artificial‑intelligence data centres, a move that has already led to a partnership with Meta. The Trump administration has backed Oklo and its technology, but the reactors are still unapproved. Some experts question whether they can be operated safely and reliably at this stage.
