Paris Secures Socialist Victory as Left Sweeps Key French Municipal Elections

At the municipal elections in France, the second round held on Sunday saw Emmanuel Grégoire of the Socialist Party decisively defeat Rachida Dati of the Republicans in Paris. In Lyon, Grégory Doucet won for the Greens/Left, while Jean‑Michel Aulas of the Right announced an objection to the result. Marseille stayed in left‑leaning hands, with Benoît Payan emerging victorious. In Nîmes, the left gained a seat when the list of Vincent Bouget surpassed that of the National Rally. Toulouse’s right‑wing coalition held its ground; Jean‑Luc Moudenc was re‑elected with support from far‑right forces.

Other cities reported similar outcomes: right‑liberal Edouard Philippe secured another term in Le Havre; in Brest, long‑time Socialist mayor François Cuillandre was replaced by Stéphane Roudaut, an independent candidate put forward by the right. Left or Socialist candidates also clinched important victories in Montpellier, Lille, Pau, and Amiens, while the Right performed strongly in Besançon.
