Parliament Blocked: Why the Judge Election Fallout Isn’t Over

Following a failed election for judges, the conservative bloc (Union) is rejecting calls for an emergency session of the Bundestag (German parliament) to elect the new constitutional court judges.

Sources within the Union, speaking to the “Rhinische Post” newspaper, confirmed that they see no urgency for such a session, particularly during the parliamentary summer recess when it had been proposed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and opposition parties.

SPD Parliamentary Secretary Dirk Wiese has again urged the Union to meet with SPD candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf. Speaking to the “Rhinische Post” Wiese stated that, given the plagiarism allegations leveled against her by the Union have been proven unfounded, the bloc should promptly seek a conversation with Professor Brosius-Gersdorf. He suggested the fabricated defamation campaign, originating from right-wing news portals, would dissipate once such engagement occurred.

Responding to Wiese’s call, representatives from the Union acknowledged the proposal for a meeting with Professor Brosius-Gersdorf, offering no immediate commitment beyond noting its receipt.
