The German main airports handled 207.2 million passengers in 2025, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday. This represents a 3.9 % rise over the 2024 figure.
Compared with the pre‑COVID peak of 226.7 million passengers in 2019, passenger traffic in 2025 was down 8.6 %. Domestic travel remained far below its 2019 level, while international traffic had moved closer to that historic level.
In 2025, foreign flights carried 195.3 million passengers – a 4.1 % increase from the previous year. Domestic flights carried 11.9 million passengers, up 0.3 % year‑on‑year, yet still about 48.4 % lower than the 2019 domestic figure. International passenger numbers were only 4.1 % below their pre‑pandemic peak, underscoring the continued disparity between domestic and international recoveries that began after the 2020 collapse.
Air freight through the main airports in 2025 totaled 4.75 million tonnes, a 1.7 % lift over 2024’s 4.67 million tonnes. This is 1.4 % above the 2019 level of 4.68 million tonnes, indicating that freight traffic has slightly surpassed its pre‑COVID benchmark.
