An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has struck the Andean region of Peru, resulting in at least five fatalities. According to authorities released on Sunday, the disaster also left more than 20 individuals injured, and approximately 300 people are now homeless.
The tremor occurred on Saturday at 9:24 PM local time, according to the U.S. Earthquake Watch. The epicenter was located two kilometers southwest of the city of Sicaya in the Huancayo province, with a depth reported at ten kilometers.
The Peruvian Disaster Protection Institute stated that the number of people still missing remains uncertain. Damage has been extensive, with several buildings, including the local church and a monastery, either collapsing or sustaining damage.
Luis Vasquez, head of the local disaster protection agency, explained that the prevalence of simple adobe brick construction in the area aggravated the damage. In the particularly affected agricultural region of Chongo Bajo, residents were found sheltering under blankets in the ruins of their homes. Animals were also sighted among the debris.
