Polenz Criticizes Merz’s “Show‑manship” and Demands Stability Before CDU Conference

Former CDU Secretary General Ruprecht Polenz interprets Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s announcement that he intends to stay in office for a “longer period” as a clear signal to any potential rivals.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Friday, Polenz said it was not the time for a “crown‑prince parade”. He added that, given the political chatter in the Union, it was right to make his remarks before the upcoming CDU party conference.

Polenz stressed that Germany needs a stable government, especially amid external security threats. “Speculation over what will happen after the next Bundestag election in three years is completely misplaced. Mr Merz wants to put a stop to that” he said.

The 70‑year‑old Merz had told attendees at a campaign event in Trier on Wednesday evening, “I still plan to stay in office for a longer period”. He also mentioned that his father turned 102 in January.
