The Police Union (GdP) is calling for the use of electronic ankle restraints for suspects following ongoing investigations into alleged far-left sabotage incidents in Berlin. Stephan Weh, the GdP regional head in Berlin, told “Welt am Sonntag”, “Perhaps it is finally time to apply electronic ankle restraints to these terrorists as part of crime prevention. We do it for Islamists; why not here too.”
The demand stems from the investigation involving four suspected far-left extremists who are reportedly responsible for an attempted attack on the power supply system at the technology park in Adlershof, Berlin, planned for September 2025. Currently, these accused remain at large.
Weh also criticized the slow progress of the legal proceedings. Following complaints from the defendants regarding searches and the seizure of data carriers, the case has been awaiting decisions from the Berlin District Court I for several months. “We are honestly horrified by how the court and the public prosecutor continuously shift responsibility here,” Weh stated. He added that the investigative team had prepared all necessary measures meticulously. “This ping-pong game is becoming absurd and gives the impression that there is no real interest in advancing the investigation.”
