Police Union Warns of Terror Threat Ahead of Germany’s Karneval Festivities

In anticipation of the upcoming peak of the carnival season, the Police Union (GdP) reports a heightened threat situation. Patrick Schlüter, the state chairman of the GdP in North Rhine‑Westphalia, told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday issue) that his colleagues will protect the carnival and its attendees. He described it as “a huge challenge – both because of the sheer number of people on the streets and because an abstract terror threat still exists”.

The local authorities will decide on the concrete police measures. Schlüter said he expects mobile vehicle blockades, increased video surveillance in particular areas, and strict enforcement of weapon‑prohibited zones.
