Jens Spahn, the leader of the CDU parliamentary group, has advocated for a renewed societal debate concerning the return to nuclear energy and the recommissioning of recently shut-down reactors. Speaking at the CDU’s innovation congress, Spahn mentioned that studies suggest reactivating the decommissioned reactors could cost around nine to ten billion euros. He stressed that, regardless of the cost implications, tackling this issue requires a broad public discussion. As an example of comparison, Spahn noted that building a brand-new nuclear power plant in other nations reportedly costs between thirty, forty, or fifty billion euros. Because reactivating the existing, recently shut-down facilities is considerably cheaper, he asserted that the discussion is worthwhile.
