Power Struggle Threatens Court Appointment

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has refuted reports suggesting an agreement between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the SPD within the Bundestag regarding the selection of Professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf for the position of Vice-President of the Federal Constitutional Court.

Dirk Wiese, Parliamentary Secretary of the SPD parliamentary group, stated in an interview with “Welt” that all three nominees for the Federal Constitutional Court are “exceptionally qualified legal scholars, making them professionally excellent for Karlsruhe”. He emphasized the high caliber of the candidates.

Wiese clarified that the decision regarding who will succeed Doris König as Vice-President of the Federal Constitutional Court ultimately rests with the Federal Council, not the Bundestag. Consequently, he stressed, there is no pre-existing arrangement or predetermined preference in the selection process.
