President Steinmeier Opposes Germany’s 2036 Olympic Bid, Citing the 1936 Legacy

Frank‑Walter Steinmeier has said that Germany should not submit a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Summer Games. The decision, reported by the Spiegel, comes from Germany’s presidential office.

The president considers the year 2036 “historically problematic” for a German bid. A century earlier, in 1936, Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist regime staged the Olympic Games and turned the event into a massive propaganda spectacle.

Today, Germany is debating whether it will host the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. A spokesperson told the Spiegel that the president hopes the Games will eventually be held in Germany in 2040 or 2044 instead.
