Prien Urges Parity Review as SPD Demands Women‑Focused Representation

In the coalition dispute over the next electoral reform, Federal Minister of Family Affairs Karin Prien (CDU) has voiced support for revisiting parity models.
She told Focus:

> “An electoral reform has to happen. Whoever is directly elected in a constituency must receive a seat in the Bundestag – anything else only fuels political cynicism, because downgrading the first‑vote in a constituency undermines the principle of democracy”.
> “In the course of such a reform, we should also examine how a constitutional route to parity could be established”.

The SPD frames a further reform around better representation of women in parliament.
Bundestag vice‑president Josephine Ortleb told the magazine:

> “Parity in parliaments has always been our goal. When the electoral law is reformed, it must be with parity”.

Saskia Esken, chair of the family committee and former SPD chairwoman, also advocates for a statutory change. She added:

> “If we reform the electoral law now, we must ensure that women receive adequate representation in the Bundestag”.
