Qatar is reportedly preparing to pursue legal action against Israel following an airstrike in Doha that targeted Hamas representatives. Majid al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” that a legal team has been tasked with examining all potential legal avenues.
Beyond the legal pursuit, Doha intends to bring the matter before the United Nations Security Council. Simultaneously, Qatar is working to cultivate a stronger, unified international stance regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Al-Ansari stated the international community must take steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring, characterizing Netanyahu’s actions as potentially transforming Israel into a “rogue state.
He specifically urged European nations to more forcefully challenge the Israeli Prime Minister, expressing a concern that Netanyahu poses a threat to collective security. He called on Europe to overcome its current reticence and engage more decisively.
The recent strike has also significantly impacted ongoing ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip. According to Al-Ansari, discussions are currently suspended and Qatar is reluctant to continue acting as a mediator, citing the apparent contradiction of presenting proposals while simultaneously conducting airstrikes on individuals involved in discussions. He emphasized that negotiations would remain stalled “as long as Netanyahu continues to bombard those he is speaking with”.
