“Ragebait” Named Youth Word of 2026: Defining the Social Media Trend of Anger-Driven Controversy

The term “Ragebait” has been selected as the Youth Word of the Year for 2026. This announcement was made on Saturday by the Langenscheidt publishing house during the Frankfurt Book Fair. In the final decision round, “Ragebait” surpassed the contenders “Crashout” and “Peak.”

According to the jury, the phrase “Ragebait” refers to content intentionally designed to evoke intense reactions, primarily anger. The jury explains that this content aims to deliberately trigger emotion, often employing provocative viewpoints, blatant inaccuracies, or extreme opinions. The reasoning presented by the jury is that stirring up anger is precisely what generates comments, shares, and greater reach on social media platforms-the more agitated people become, the more effective the post is.

Meanwhile, the term “Crashout” signifies a fit of temper, a public outburst, or an emotional collapse, and it can be used either seriously or ironically. Separately, “Peak” means the absolute best or the highest level of quality.
