Rail Union Demands State Subsidy for Train Tickets Amid Fuel Crisis

The railway union EVG is calling for the government to significantly lower train ticket prices amid the fuel price crisis. Union chief Martin Burkert stated in “Bild am Sonntag” that policymakers must utilize the state-owned company Deutsche Bahn, in addition to implementing a windfall tax on oil corporations, rather than allowing themselves to be dictated to by these energy companies. He argued that providing a temporary 30 percent discount on the Deutschlandticket, along with fare reductions of up to 50 percent on long-distance travel, would offer “a quick and effective relief”.
