Rehlinger Urges SPD to Shed Bureaucratic Image in Three‑Step Revamp Plan

Saarland’s Minister-President and SPD deputy, Anke Rehlinger, has demanded that her party take decisive action after the recent electoral loss in Rheinland‑Pfalz. “The SPD has never learned from its problems by simply making staff changes” she told “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. While she declined to comment on any immediate personnel moves, she criticized the federal party as being “too technocratic” and “often sounding like a filing cabinet”. Rehlinger said the SPD must be a party of jobs-a party that sounds as dependable as a reliable colleague.

She outlined three key steps for the SPD:

1. “Address everyday concerns”. The party must focus on the issues people discuss over dinner at home, rather than merely chasing the themes that earn the most applause within the SPD.
2. “Link prosperity with fairness”. Economic strength and social justice should go hand in hand. Social policy is essential, but it requires a solid economic foundation so that everyone can prosper. Rehlinger urged the federal government to present a bold reform package jointly to make Germany fit for the future.
3. “Strengthen local branches”. Internally, the SPD must finally give attention to its single‑seat state associations. If the party remains a one‑member stronghold in large states, it will struggle to achieve good results at the federal level. The recent Baden‑Württemberg election, where the SPD slipped to 5.5 percent, underscores that danger.
