Rehlinger Warns of France’s Political Crisis Risks

Saarland’s Ministerpräsidentin Anke Rehlinger has cautioned against the potential repercussions of a political crisis in France, speaking ahead of a crucial confidence vote in the French parliament. Rehlinger, of the SPD party, emphasized the necessity of a robust Germany firmly committed to European integration, alongside a similarly stable France, ideally maintaining the established Franco-German partnership.

She expressed her hope for continued governmental stability in France following the vote, stating that President Emmanuel Macron remains a significant figure in Europe and vital for the Franco-German relationship until his term concludes in 2027.

Ahead of the IAA motor show, Rehlinger addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the European Union’s combustion engine ban set to take effect in 2035. She underscored the importance of addressing the industrial realities associated with the policy and finding a balance with climate objectives.

While acknowledging that the ban could pose challenges for the automotive industry, Rehlinger suggested a need to examine pathways and interim steps to ensure a smooth transition. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding jobs and ensuring the future viability of the automotive sector rather than questioning the overarching goals themselves.
