Reiche Urges Rapid Free‑Trade Deals with Malaysia and Indonesia to Offset Trump Tariffs

Economic Minister Katherina Reiche of the CDU is urging the swift conclusion of free‑trade agreements with Malaysia and Indonesia as a response to the tariff policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

She told the Sunday editions of the Funke Media Group that Germany is already suffering significant trade losses with the United States. “The negative effects of the U.S. tariff policy are not only felt by American companies and consumers through higher prices, but also by our export‑oriented businesses” she said. “Uncertainty over what really applies is harming the economies on both sides of the Atlantic”.

Reiche called for “further free‑trade deals” and noted that Malaysia, Indonesia and other potential partners are on standby. “These agreements must be negotiated quickly and put into practice” she added.
