Frederik Ruppert secured the gold medal in the 3,000-meter hurdles at the Birmingham European Athletics Championships, crossing the finish line first on Sunday evening with a time of 8:25.33. In another strong showing, Karl Bebendorf captured the bronze medal, finishing behind the Luxembourgian Ruben Querinjean.
Earlier in the competition, the German team claimed the silver medal in the mixed relay over four x 100 meters with a time that set a new national record. Kevin Kranz, Rebekka Haase, Heiko Gussmann, and Gina Lückenkemper clocked 40.11 seconds for the stadium round. Despite the home crowd’s support, the British relay team was ultimately faster, even establishing a European record with 39.97 seconds.
On the final evening of the competition, thrower Julia Ulbricht also earned a silver medal with a throw of 61.53 meters. The European Championships debutante was narrowly beaten only by the experienced Croat, Sara Kolak.
Meanwhile, Malaika Mihambo faced an unexpected setback in the long jump. Although the athlete from Kurpfalz started well, landing her first jump over 6.94 meters, she was subsequently unable to catch up, being surpassed by four other competitors.
