Rural Districts Urge Permanent Solution to Keep Crucial Fuel Discounts Amid High Energy Costs

The German District Council Day (DLT) is urgently calling for an immediate agreement regarding an extension of the gas and fuel discount, which is set to expire at the end of June. According to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Monday edition), DLT President Achim Brötel stressed that given the volatile geopolitical situation, a fall in energy prices seems unlikely in the near future. Therefore, the government must start planning now to ensure that affected citizens receive support not only during the summer but potentially beyond that as well.

Brötel emphasized the need for a timely solution while discouraging further internal conflicts within the governing coalition. He noted that financial assistance is absolutely essential for many people residing in rural areas. These regions suffer disproportionately from high fuel costs because the distances to places of employment are generally much longer.

For the DLT, the central objective is ensuring that comparable living standards are established across all parts of the country, which necessitates compensation mechanisms. The specific method-whether it involves extending the gas discount, increasing commuter allowances, or using other means-is considered secondary. What is paramount is guaranteeing that the relief measures effectively reach citizens residing outside major urban centers.
