Initial indications from the state election in Saxony-Anhalt suggest a very high voter turnout. According to the State Election Director, as of 2 p.m. on Sunday, 54.4 percent of eligible voters had already cast their ballots.
This current figure is significantly higher than the turnout observed at the same time during the state elections of June 6, 2021, when only 27.1 percent of voters had participated.
While the 2021 election took place amid the shadow of the Coronavirus pandemic, the turnout has also far exceeded figures recorded during state elections held between 2002 and 2016. The State Election Director noted that during that earlier period, turnout by 2 p.m. typically ranged much lower, between 20.1 and 35.4 percent. Polling stations will close at 6 p.m.
