The German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is transferring responsibility for the review of pandemic-era mask procurement, previously overseen under former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), to a new team. According to sources within the parliamentary budget committee, quoted by the “Tagesspiegel”, legal expert Lippold von Bredow will now lead this working group.
Von Bredow, a member of the CDU, most recently served as a ministerial advisor within the Bundestag administration, where he headed the secretariat of the budget committee. His appointment has drawn criticism from the Green party. Paula Piechotta, responsible for the health budget within the Green party, expressed concerns to the “Tagesspiegel”, stating that the move suggests an attempt to shield the CDU from scrutiny. She suggested the re-assignment signals an effort to halt a thorough investigation into the procurement processes.
Piechotta emphasized von Bredow’s extensive knowledge of the budget committee’s procedures, highlighting his future role within the working group. She voiced apprehension that this detailed understanding could be leveraged to potentially impede the investigation’s progress. Notably, Lippold von Bredow only recently transitioned from the Committee on Economic Affairs to lead the secretariat of the budget committee.
