Alexander Schweitzer, the deputy chairman of the SPD, is demanding that the federal government improve its efficiency and provide citizens with more relief. Speaking to the newspaper “Die Zeit”, Schweitzer insisted that the government must “ensure that the tax relief at the pump remains, and that it continues past the end of the year.” He emphasized that the government needs to put forward concrete solutions immediately.
Regarding Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU, the former minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate stated that he expects a different communication style. He criticized Merz’s rhetoric: “As for the Chancellor, I can only hope that this endless talk about allegedly lazy Germans and the necessity of cutting the welfare state stops.” When asked if he would support a change of chancellor, Schweitzer replied that “it is the task of the Union to bring clarity on this matter.”
Schweitzer also advised the CDU to reconsider its approach to reform debates, suggesting, “The Union has a social tradition that it should once again reflect upon.” However, he cautioned his own party, the SPD, against lightly questioning the coalition. He stated, “I disagree with everyone who says we must now jeopardize this coalition in order to sharpen our own profile to the maximum. That would be a mistake.”
Schweitzer is considered a potential future leader of the SPD, currently serving as a parliamentary group leader in the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. While he acknowledged having federal political ambitions, he did not deny them. “We will discuss that soon in Rhineland-Palatinate and within the SPD,” he said, adding that he is “not currently involved in an internal party election campaign.”
