In light of the renewed surge in gasoline prices, Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a member of the SPD, is intensifying her demand for the implementation of a fuel price cap, following the model used in Luxembourg. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday, Schwesig stressed that the current trajectory of fuel costs is unsustainable. She pointed out that essential workers, such as commuters, tradespeople, nurses, and farmers, are struggling to cope with the financial strain. The SPD politician argued that the Chancellor can no longer afford to ignore this matter, asserting that “there must now be a solution.” Schwesig specifically advocated for adopting the Luxembourg model for the price cap. She criticized corporate behavior, stating that it is unacceptable for major corporations to be achieving record profits while German private drivers are shouldering the resulting cost burden.
