Schwesig Urges Rapid Gas Storage Refill to Stabilize Energy Prices Amid Iran Conflict

Facing the rise in energy prices caused by the Iran war, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern’s Minister‑President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has urged the federal government to present a plan for price stabilization and to refill gas storage facilities quickly.

“Thursday is the Minister‑President meeting” Schwesig told the Stern. “I have a clear expectation that the federal government will give an assessment of the situation and also propose ways to stabilize the economy and energy prices”. She added that “topping up the gas storages swiftly is part of that effort”.

Schwesig stressed that it must be clear that citizens and the economy can no longer absorb additional burdens. She said the Middle Eastern situation concerns her primarily because of the civilian population and German nationals caught there, but also worries her about the potential impact on energy prices and the broader economy.

She warned that the relief measures already introduced for the public should not be lost. In recent months, the government and the state together managed to lower energy prices and ease commuters’ costs by raising the commuter allowance. “These relief measures must not be taken away again” Schwesig said.
