Secret Talks Rock Germany China Ties

The German government has confirmed that Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday. The encounter, described as a “drop-in” visit, occurred while Chancellor Merz was already present at the Chancellery for other consultations.

Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency in Berlin on Monday, confirmed the meeting took place but emphasized the confidentiality surrounding its content. “The Chancellor did, in fact, see and speak with the Foreign Minister during a drop-in visit while attending other consultations at the Chancellery” Kornelius stated. “I cannot provide any information regarding the content of the discussions, which were confidential.

Regarding the lack of official announcements concerning the meeting, Kornelius indicated that it is common practice not to publicize “drop-in” encounters. He noted that Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s presence and activities during a meeting with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, were communicated through standard channels, including a press conference, fulfilling the government’s obligation to inform the public.

Chinese state media subsequently reported that Chancellor Merz had pledged to work towards “openness and mutual benefit” with China, to promote fair trade and to jointly address global crises and challenges. Xinhua also reported that the German government’s adherence to the One China policy was reaffirmed during the meeting.
