Following a recent cabinet decision regarding the motherhood pension and the stabilization of pension levels and amid rising calls for extending the working lifetime, SPD deputy leader Alexander Schweitzer is advocating for strengthening the pension insurance system through wage income and the creation of socially insured employment.
Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Schweitzer emphasized that the key lies in getting more people into stable, long-term employment and ensuring reasonable wages through collective bargaining agreements. He argued that this would provide a solid financial foundation for the pension insurance system. “We mustn’t overlook these central points in favor of populist demands” he stated.
Schweitzer, who also serves as the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, adopted a cautious stance regarding a proposal by SPD leader Bärbel Bas to include civil servants as contributors to the pension insurance system. “This is a discussion point that would entail enormous structural changes” he commented. “Our society needs to discuss this intensely”.
