Slovenian Liberals Clinch Narrow Lead Over Conservatives, Failing to Secure Seat Majority in Tight Parliamentary Race-Coalition Talks Hampered by Foreign Interference Allegations

In Slovenia’s recent parliamentary election the ruling Liberal party, led by Prime Minister Robert Golob, edged out the conservative bloc by a slim margin. After the final vote count, Golob’s Freedom Movement (G S) secured 28.6 % of the vote, translating into 29 of the 90 seats in the National Assembly. The Slovene Democratic Party of former Prime Minister Janez Janša took 28 % of the votes and ended up with 28 seats. The result marks a notable setback for Golob’s party, which held 41 seats after the 2022 election. Nevertheless, he already proclaimed himself the winner.

With the two major parties virtually tied, coalition talks are expected to prove challenging. The election campaign was also marred by allegations of foreign interference.
