Two men died on Sunday following the crash of a small aircraft near Viernheim. According to the Southern Hesse Police Department, the fatalities were a 67-year-old man, presumed to be the pilot, and a 76-year-old passenger. The plane crashed around 4:45 PM while approaching the Weinheim/Bergstraße airfield due to reasons that are yet to be determined.
A 40-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child sustained the most serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. The cause of the crash remains unclear. The Darmstadt Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the securing of the wreckage. The accident site has been cordoned off for the duration of the recovery operations and subsequent investigations.
Police helicopter footage captured an overview of the scene. Officials from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation are currently on site and have launched investigations alongside the criminal police to determine the exact cause of the incident. The police are urging any witnesses with relevant information to come forward.
