Snow‑Ice Storm Halts Transport, Sparks Accidents Across Germany

Glaze‑ice rain in the east and northeast and heavy snow in the south caused many accidents and disruptions on Monday morning.
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the hardest-hit areas were parts of Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony‑Anhalt. The warning for Saxony was lowered, but neighboring states were also affected. DWD warned of general road and rail traffic impairments; in the northeast there was an added risk of severe ice build‑up on infrastructure and vegetation, potentially leading to ice-breakage.

In Baden‑Württemberg the alarm for substantial morning snowfall was also reduced, yet portions of Bavaria received the same warning. The service cautioned that this could bring major road and public‑transport disruptions and that trees might collapse under the snow load.

Consequently, in Würzburg the tram and bus network was suspended until further notice because of the snowfall. Across Lower Franconia, all in‑person classes were cancelled.

Deutsche Bahn announced that winter storms in southwestern Germany had already begun to affect long‑distance services, and the Hamburg S‑-Bahn also reported restrictions.
