Social Welfare Group Demands Urgent Overhaul of Overwhelmed Emergency Healthcare System

The German social association, Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD), is appealing for the swift implementation of the planned reform of emergency care. SoVD Chairwoman Michaela Engelmeier told the “Rheinische Post” that the overhaul of emergency services must happen without further delay. She noted that emergency rooms have been operating at maximum capacity for years, and the on-call services provided by the regional medical associations were often inadequate, adding that the reform was long overdue. Furthermore, Engelmeier stressed that the reform must be conceived with patients in mind, especially since they are laypeople placed in personal emergency situations. According to the SoVD chairwoman, emergency and acute care services must be able to provide immediate, targeted, and needs-appropriate treatment across the board and around the clock. Concurrently, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) intends to reduce the number of cases treated at hospital rescue stations, thereby projecting potential savings exceeding one billion Euros. She plans to detail these measures at noon on Wednesday.
