The VdK social association sharply criticized recent government decisions aimed at mitigating high energy prices. During an interview with “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” VdK President Verena Bentele stated that politics once again seems to rely on relief measures passing to citizens through market mechanisms. She argued that this approach is insufficient for many households that are already struggling to cover basic living expenses. Although the planned reduction of the mineral oil tax is being touted as a financial relief, Bentele criticized it, asserting that it is “in reality not a precisely targeted form of help for people with little money”. She contended that the primary beneficiaries are corporations, adding that “those who have to make every euro count ultimately get left behind”. Furthermore, the VdK president criticized the tax-free premium for employees, claiming it still falls short of a fair resolution. She noted that individuals with small pension incomes, many students, or families on very low earnings will largely benefit from it, despite being those who feel the effects of rising prices most acutely. Overall, she concluded that economic interests appear to have been carefully considered, while targeted support for low-income households is lacking. Consequently, the VdK is calling for a policy shift toward needs-based measures that genuinely reach those who need relief most urgently.
