SoVD Urges Faster Heat Protection Ahead of Wave

Germany’s leading social welfare association, Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD), is urging accelerated implementation of heat protection measures as a significant heatwave approaches. Michaela Engelmeier, the SoVD’s chairperson, stated on Tuesday that long-term data reveals approximately two-thirds of the population express considerable concern regarding intense heat and extreme weather events. She emphasized that mitigating the consequences of climate change represents a fundamental responsibility for both political and administrative bodies.

The association is calling for swift and nationally comprehensive implementation of heat protection strategies, with dedicated and guaranteed funding from the federal and state governments. While historically, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, infants, young children and outdoor workers have been disproportionately affected, the organization notes a growing impact across broader demographics.

Engelmeier highlighted the escalating human cost, stating that heat-related deaths number in the thousands annually in Germany. She argued that existing societal structures and infrastructure are fundamentally unprepared for prolonged periods of extreme heat, necessitating rapid adaptation and preventative measures to safeguard public health.

Despite recent rainfall, experts confirm that July experienced significantly above-average temperatures and forecasts predict temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in many regions in the coming days. This projected heatwave underscores the urgency of the SoVD’s call for more decisive action on heat protection.
