Jens Spahn, parliamentary group leader for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has indicated a composed stance regarding potential investigations into the controversial “mask affair”. Responding to inquiries from “Stern” magazine, Spahn stated he harbors no fear regarding the prospect of a formal investigative committee.
He advocated for an inquiry – a structured, fact-finding process – as the preferred method for addressing the issues and achieving societal resolution. Spahn asserted that the previous governing coalition effectively navigated the challenging period of the pandemic and that individuals should not be subjected to undue criticism for their actions.
Spahn expressed concern over what he described as “malicious accusations” leveled against him during the ongoing debate. He emphasized the necessity of evaluating his actions within the context of the dire circumstances prevalent at the time, underlining the nation’s initial lack of preparedness. He argued that retrospective assessments, five years later, retroactively apply standards as if the global pandemic had not occurred.
The Green Party and the Left Party are actively pushing for the establishment of an investigative committee to examine the mask affair and, specifically, Spahn’s conduct. Securing the necessary majority for such a committee would require support from either the AfD or the Social Democratic Party (SPD). With the far-right AfD deemed an unsuitable partner for cooperation, Green and Left Party representatives are now intensifying pressure on the SPD to endorse the creation of the investigative body.
