German politician Jens Spahn, parliamentary group leader of the CDU, has reiterated his concerns regarding wealth inequality in Germany, advocating for measures aimed at fostering a greater sense of balance.
Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” Spahn emphasized the pronounced disparity in wealth distribution within the nation, stating that the current situation poses a significant challenge. He argued against a system where wealth accumulation for some is disproportionately driven by rising stock values, while others struggle to accumulate even modest savings. Spahn suggested that a degree of redress is warranted.
While acknowledging the need to consider the implications of a recent constitutional court decision regarding inheritance tax, Spahn did not rule out potential adjustments to inheritance tax laws. He stressed the importance of ensuring that family businesses can continue to be passed down to the next generation without detrimental financial impact, reaffirming this commitment.
Regarding the potential impact of modifying existing exemptions within inherited tax regulations, Spahn suggested further discussion should occur following the aforementioned court ruling.
Spahn identified supporting wealth creation as a critical initial step. He proposed government assistance with property acquisition, particularly for individuals and families with lower incomes, suggesting potential exemptions from property taxes for first-time homeowners as an example. The planned initiative to offer earlier retirement options was also cited as aligning with this broader goal of improving financial stability and opportunity for a wider segment of the population.
