Spahn Optimistic: Rubio’s Munich Speech Reaffirms the NATO Partnership

Jens Spahn, the CDU parliamentary group leader, said after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s address at the Munich Security Conference that it is hopeful the transatlantic partnership can be preserved. “Rubio’s speech shows that NATO endures and that we share a common working foundation with the U.S. government” Spahn told “Handelsblatt”‘s Monday edition, adding that this enables “very good work”.

Rubio had affirmed the U.S.‑Europe alliance in Munich, stating, “We want Europe to be strong”. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the U.S. alliance as a “competitive advantage” for both sides, while a senior NATO diplomat spoke of a “new dynamism” and expressed satisfaction with the conference’s progress. Representatives of the German government echoed these positive remarks.
